"Photomosaic" is a trademark of some schmoe from MIT (seriously). Freelancer is a trademark of Microsoft. I'm posting this one in deviations (unlike [link] that I put in my scraps) because I gathered all those pictures from various sources (most of them are screenshots I took myself, about 25 pictures were taken from fansites and mobygames.) I also spent like 3 hours trying to get it to look right... if I had twice as many pictures it would probably look better... I might remake it, I dunno. Download if you want to see the full effect, it's 1988x2772 pixels. I'd love to offer this as a print, but for obvious reasons I can't. too bad, so sad. take it to Kinkos and ahve them print it on Ledger paper if you like it that much.
Even though the main image is not very clear, it's full of colour and variety and each tile is interesting to see. I use a very large photo library for my own mosaics and the one downside to it is that a lot of boring-looking tiles get used side by side.
Yea, the main image isn't clear, but because of the color variation, it still looks exactly like the original image from a distance. btw, did you look at the one I made for ? It has about 800 cells if I recall correctly, but only around 220 unique cells, so there are triplicates and quadruplicates, so I think it kinda suffers from what you're saying. of course none of her artwork is boring imo. But in each case, I was limited by the theme of the cells. I have a mosaic in my scraps which I used an internet thing that drew pictures from one of those image websites, and so there was a lot more variety there. But I figure I can't really claim that as art since it's not my library.
well the one I claim as my own art is in my gallery here:[link]
the reason I don't claim the one in my scraps, other than not having gathered the pictures myself, is that like, I did no work at all with it. I just inputted the picture and let the algorithm do all the work. wheras, I did quite a bit of tweaking with the settings trying to get everyhitng to look just right with this one and the one I linked above. But here's the one in my scraps, I think it has like 2500 cells. [link]
on a related note, i'm curious about your feelings on tinting? the one in my scraps is obviously tinted, but the two in my gallery are all the original colors. I considered tinting on the one I've linked on the top, but I kinda felt like that might be "cheating"
I went to the site and it's a lot of fun! However I see what you mean about it not really being your own art. Still, a lot of fun.
I'm not a fan of overlays. They really distract and subtract from the mosaic. Generally you can tell right away when someone's overlaying the original image. However, there's a grey area when it comes to single-colour tinting of a tile as long as it isn't a large amount of colour adjustment. The same sort of adjustments could also be made in Photoshop. I use Andreamosaic for my mosaics, and I use a 5% tint on some of the mosaics, just a uniform colour adjustment for each tile wherever necessary. I don't know whether it makes much of a difference, but it can't be noticed unless there are duplicates used in different parts of the mosaic and tinted different ways, and even then you have to really look hard. Since it can't be noticed I don't think it does any harm.
Ahh, Freelancer. What a game. All I have to say is, would it be possible to put more pictures in the thing? More pieces? Then you can get much better resolution on the whole thing, but making it bigger.
oh yes, it's definitely possible to do it. the mosaic I made for had like 3 times as many cells in it, so it looks a lot clearer (of course the diversity of color was really low for that picture, but I still like how it came out.) you did a mosaic before too didn't you? or am I confusing you with one of the other people I watch? lol, I can be out of it sometimes. Check out the ur-quan in my scraps for a mosaic with more detail; the link is in the description of this deviation.
well like I said, I would need more screen shots. I could use them twice as often, like I did with the other mosaic I did. But, like I said, I'd rather gather a few hundred more screenshots together for diversity. I miss playing the game, I gotta get my comp fixed lol
I couldn't find the other mosaic you said you had in your scraps. What's it called?
